Overview

The easy one, and a great first volcano. Hotel pickup in Antigua at 8:00 a.m. in a private bus, then a scenic drive to Pacaya Volcano National Park. From the park entrance you hike through pine forest into an open volcanic landscape shaped by decades of eruptions.

You walk across hardened lava rivers, past steaming vents, with panoramic views of Guatemala’s volcanic chain, up to the highest accessible point on Cerro Negro at 2,552 m. Then back down and back to Antigua. Family-friendly and a good introduction to hiking here.

A private departure — your group only, plus the park’s own local guide.

The route

From the Pacaya National Park entrance the trail climbs about 2.8 km to the Cerro Negro viewpoint at 2,552 m — roughly 3 hours of walking round trip. A local park guide joins alongside the Terrava guide (required by the park).

Questions about this hike

Is it really an active volcano?
Yes. Pacaya has frequent low-level activity. We follow INSIVUMEH updates and the park’s access rules, and only go where it’s safe.
Is it good for kids?
Yes — minimum age is 10, and it’s a common family hike. The terrain is uneven volcanic rock, so closed shoes matter.
Can we roast marshmallows on the vents?
When conditions allow and the park permits it — bring some.
